Women's Cross Country Places Fourth at the JMU Invitational

NEW MARKET, Va. - The George Mason women's cross country team earned their second consecutive top-five finish to open the season when they finished in fourth place with 130 team points on Saturday morning at the JMU Invitational at New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va. Last weekend, the Patriots placed fifth at the Towson Invitational.

Four George Mason athletes finished in the top 35 at the meet with senior Alicia York leading the way, placing 29th with a time of 21:47.10. Freshman Samantha Fickel was the second Patriot to cross the finish line, placing 32nd with a time of 22:04.70. Sophomore Candace Carter finished 34th with a time of 22:10.60, with senior Melissa Ferry right on her heels, placing 35th with a time of 22:20.10.

Also running at the meet were Amy Yocum, who finished 54th (24:02.80), Danielle Turner, who placed 55th (24:09.30), Katherine Griffith, who finished 67th (25:02.80) and Jonecia Gates, who finished 79th (28:28.30)
 

 

Georgetown won the meet with 25 points, while host James Madison finished second with 31 points, led by Deena Spickard's first-place finish (19:12.90). Washington and Lee placed third with 99 team points.

George Mason returns to action two weeks from now when it hosts the Mason Invitational on Sept. 29 at Bull Run Park in Manassas, Va.
