Diggin' It with Kristen Byler - Entry #7

Nov. 19, 2007

FAIRFAX, Va. - Five straight losses is not the way anyone wants to end a season much less a career, but as I told my teammates Friday night after our season ending loss to Hofstra, actual wins and losses will only be a fraction of what I will remember from my four years with Mason volleyball.

Of course I will never forget stepping onto the floor as a freshman for the first time to help my team beat Maryland Eastern Shore for my first ever collegiate victory; I will never forget beating Florida State 3-2 in their gym; I won't forget playing in the CAA tournament my freshman year and happily, my senior year; and I will certainly never forget the frustration of suffering two losing seasons or the pride of working our way back to the CAA tournament.

But it's the time spent with my teammates that will dominate my memories. At the risk of sounding trite, the relationships that I built as a Patriot are what made my four years amazing. It was rarely easy, but it was always worth it. Martin Luther King once said: "occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart;" with that I simply leave all teammates, coaches, athletic staff, and fans with a THANK YOU.
