Nov. 14, 2008
FAIRFAX, Va. - Two Patriots reached double-figures in kills as the George Mason women's volleyball team cruised to a three-set sweep over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Friday evening in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Field House. Set scores were 25-18, 25-12, 25-14. Mason improved to 8-18 and 4-9 in the CAA as it won its second match in a row, while the Seahawks (6-22, 0-13) were denied their first conference victory of the season. Freshman Noelle Fanella led Mason with 12 kills while sophomore Holly Goode slammed home a career-high 11 kills to pace the Mason attack, which out-hit the Seahawks by a .323-to-.050 margin. Junior Rebecca Walter recorded a team-best 11 digs while four players each recorded three total blocks to power the front line, which held a 9-to-3 blocking advantage in the match. UNC Wilmington was led by six kills from Paula McConnell and Megan Nash. It was the Seahawks who jumped out to an early four-point lead to begin the match, but Mason fought right back into the ledger as a 9-2 run put them ahead. UNCW pulled within a point at 9-8 but Mason maintained its grip on the lead through the duration of the first set. In the second set, Mason broke open a tight 7-6 score with seven points in a row, as UNCW could not move any closer than seven in the set, putting Mason ahead by two sets heading into the intermission. Out of the break, it was more of the same for the Patriots, who scored five of the first six points in the third set and held a comfortable lead throughout the frame as they cruised to the match victory. Mason will look to continue its winning ways as it closes out the 2008 season at home Saturday evening against Georgia State. Prior to first serve, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Field House, seniors Morgan Connell, Jourdan Dozier and Chelsea Kropp will be honored in a pre-match ceremony as they take the court for the final time in their Mason careers.
