TOWSON, Md. (September 11, 2006) - The George Mason women's tennis team won their opening match, but lost the next three in the Towson 4+1 Invitational this past weekend. The initial tournament of the season is set up in a dual match format, but shortened to four singles matches from six and instead of the best of three in doubles action; only one doubles match is played.
Head Coach Stephen Curtis Mason's went into the weekend with the goal of playing everyone at least 2 times to get experience. "I was very pleased with the effort and teamwork that this team showed. We are a very young team with a solid foundation and a strong work ethic." The team's strongest showing was from veteran Julia Moscato, who won her three singles matches and lost a close doubles match with teammate Alex Lacoste against Towson, by margins of 6-4 and 7-6. Johns Hopkins took the tournament title Saturday night. Mason tennis will be back in action on September 24 at the Mason Invitational at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
