Tennis Teams Split with Morgan State

April 13, 2005

Fairfax, Va. (4/13/2005) - The tennis teams split their matches today with Morgan State, as the women's team defeated the Bears, 6-1, and the men lost, 5-2. The women, who improve to 10-10, played at the Springfield Golf and Country Club. The men, 0-10, played at the Mason tennis courts on campus.

The women jumped on the first point of the match sweeping the doubles matches handily. The team of Andreea Fusea and Maricel Ballester continues to play well together, defeating Harper/Elsir, 8-1 and improving to 11-6 on the season. Mason's team of Jenn Dektas and Julia Moscato played together for the first time and were successful, defeating Willis/Alleyne, 8-2. Veterans Jamie Delorie and Katie Sloper defeated the Bears Rasheed/Osunsan, 8-1.

On the singles court, Mason lost only at the No. 2 position and it was a closely contested match as Walaa Elsir defeated Maricel Ballester in a tie-breaker third set, 3-6, 6-0, 13-11. The No. 1, 3, 4 and 6 matches were won in straight sets. Fusea improved her record to a team-best 11-6, Dektas improved to 10-8 and Julia Moscato continues to roll, improving to 9-5. Senior Katie Sloper battled her opponent Aidah Rasheed, splitting the first two sets then winning in the tie-breaker third set 6-2, 3-6, 10-2.

For the men's singles action, the Patriots won the top two matches with Stephan Dufils defeating Morgan State's Marcus Ngbea, 6-3, 6-2 and Tim Bainton taking care of Andre Prince, 6-1, 6-1. The No. 3 through No. 6 matches were won in straight sets by the Bears.

Doubles matches were tied at one each with Mason's No. 1 team of Dufils/Bainton defeating Morgan State's counterpart of Harper/Prince, 8-4 and the No. 3 Morgan State team of Turley/Jones defeating Santos/Le, 8-3. The No. 2 match would determine who earned the first point. It was a hard fought match, but Mason's Vogel and Hughes came up just short, losing to Ngbea/Campbell, 8-6 for the point.

Both the men's and women's teams will travel to Hofstra (4/14) and the men will then travel to Delaware (4/15) for a match postponed earlier in the year.
