April 11, 2006
Towson, Md.--The Patriots women's tennis team lost a close match, 4-3 to CAA rival Towson, a squad they most likely will face in the CAA Championships next week. Mason falls to .500 at 10-10 on the season. Three of the six singles matches were decided in the third set. In the No. 2 singles position Maricel Ballester defeated the Tigers Eva Otanka after losing the first set 6-4, Ballester won the next two sets by an identical 6-2 score. The No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions went three sets as well, but the Patriots were not as fortunate. Senior Jen Dektas and sophomore Julie Moscato each won their first set, but lost the following two to their opponents. Towson won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches losing only one game. The Patriots took the doubles points with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Fusea/Ballester defeated Patzer/Otanka, 8-6 and Dektas/Moscato won 8-1. "I was proud of the fight we showed on hostile ground," said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "This was a tough match but I think learned a few things and we hope to get revenge at the CAA tournament." Mason will host Mt. St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. then travel to Morgan St. on Thursday. Mason 3 - Towson-4 Doubles: #1 Fusea/Ballester (Mason) def.
