Breau Named VaSID Softball All-State Player of the Year

June 19, 2008

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore Ashli Breau was recognized once more for her superlative debut season with the George Mason Patriots as she was named the VaSID University Division All-State Player of the Year, as voted upon by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. Breau was selected the best offensive player from all of the Division I programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Along with this award, Breau has been selected to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Mid Atlantic Region first team as well as the All-Colonial Athletic Association second team.

Breau, a Vienna, Va., native who transferred after one year at Tiffin University, smashed a number of single-season records in her first year with the Green and Gold. She finished with a CAA-best .421 batting average, 11 home runs and a .752 slugging percentage, all of which set new Mason records. In addition, her 48 runs batted in is the second-highest season total in school history, as is her .463 on-base percentage. Breau was second in the conference in slugging percentage and RBIs, third in on-base percentage and fourth in home runs. She also tallied a team-high 11 doubles.

Among the collegiate ranks, the Vienna, Va., native finished the regular season in the top-25 nationally in three categories. She is 23rd among NCAA Division I players in batting average, 24th in RBIs per game, and 25th in slugging percentage. Her home run total of 11 bested the previous mark of seven by former Mason standout Linda Young, and places her in a tie for fourth on the career list. Breau's batting average and slugging percentage eclipsed the previous mark by 23 and 145 points, respectively.

Receiving honors as well were Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher and Scot Thomas, who were named Pitcher and Coach of the Year, respectively, along with Radford's Shannon Keefe who earned Rookie of the Year accolades.
