Patriots Split Softball Doubleheader with Drexel
May 5, 2007
The George Mason softball team got a great start from Becky Anderson and the freshman also drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Patriots downed Drexel 1-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Dragons took a 6-2 win in the second game. Anderson allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Drexel had two runners on in the second but Anderson struck out a pair of batters looking to escape the jam. In the fifth, Drexel nearly scored after a walk, wild pitch and sacrifice bunt put a runner on third, but she was thrown out when trying to score on a grounder to second. Anderson did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Mason also had a runner thrown out at home. In the sixth, Dee Murray singled, went to second on a ground out and took third on a single. She was thrown out at home, though, to end the inning. In the seventh, Kelsey Mack led off with a single and she scored on Anderson's hit up the middle. In the second game, Drexel scored in the first behind a single, stolen base, passed ball and single. In the bottom of the first, Mason took a 2-1 lead as Mandy Bach doubled and Kelsey Mack singled to put runners on the corners. Mack took second on a ground out and both runners scored on a Kristin Dickel single. But that was all the offense the Patriots managed. Drexel tied the game in the third behind a pair of doubles, added a run in the fourth behind a single, a steal and a double and scored three runs in the fifth on three hits and an error. Mason (18-34, 4-16) and Drexel (18-19, 7-12) will finish their three-game series on Sunday with a Noon start. That will end the season for Mason as the Patriots won't qualify for the CAA Tournament.
