Softball Drops Series Finale to James Madison, 3-0

April 27, 2008

Box Score

FAIRFAX, Va. - In its final home game of the season, the George Mason softball team was unable to counter James Madison's three runs as the Dukes defeated the Patriots, 3-0, in Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon. JMU improved to 27-20 (11-6 CAA) after completing the series sweep, while Mason (19-28, 6-10) ended its home schedule with a 12-10 record at home.

Meredith Felts (13-8) pitched a complete-game shutout to earn the win, allowing seven hits while striking out nine Patriot batters. For Mason, sophomore Becky Anderson (14-15) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on 12 hits in a complete-game outing.

Mason's offense was led by 2-for-4 performances from sophomore Shaniqua Steele and junior Kelsey Mack. The Patriots' lone extra-base hit of the day came off the bat of junior Dee Murray, who doubled to right-center field in the sixth inning. JMU was led by a 4-for-4 day from Jennifer Chavez.

The Dukes broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning, as a Mason error allowed Amber Kirk to score from second base. In the fifth inning, JMU added two more as Kaitlyn Wernsing singled to right-center field, scoring Chavez and Megan Forbes. Mason found its best scoring chances early in the game, as Mack advanced to third base in the first and third innings but the Patriots could not bring her home.

Mason will close out the regular season next weekend at Hofstra, beginning with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
