April 4, 2007

Box Score

Fairfax, Va.--In the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game, with two outs and one on, junior Kat Winter connected on her second double of the contest, which scored the winning run for the Patriots in their 6-5 victory over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon. In the first game of the doubleheader, Mason (12-22) was edged by The Mount (5-17), 4-3, at George Mason Field.

Winter had a 4-for-4 showing at the plate in the second contest, which included two doubles and two singles, while scoring two runs and collecting two RBI.

In the 6-5 win, sophomore Paige Miller came to the plate in the second inning with two outs reading on the scoreboard, but responded as she hit a single to leftfield. Three Patriots followed suit as all three tallied a hit, including a two run double from sophomore Sarah Martin to drive home Miller and Winter. Martin also scored after freshman Shaniqua Steele hit one of Mason's five doubles of the contest, which put Mason up by one run, 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Miller smacked a triple to rightfield for her second of the season and scored off of one of Winter's doubles. The Mount took the lead again in the fifth after scoring three runs to put the score at 5-4, but Mason was not finished. The Patriots knotted the score at five in the sixth as Winter scored and then sealed the victory in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Rachel Hastings started things off in the circle for Mason as she pitched four innings and gave up three runs off of five hits, while striking out two and walking two of the 19 batters she faced. Freshman Becky Anderson relieved Hastings and allowed two runs off of two hits and struckout three batters in three innings of work. Reanna Tuczynski earned the loss for The Mount as she gave up six runs, five earned, off of nine hits, while walking two and striking out three of the 34 Patriots she faced.

In the first contest, junior Emily Miller hit one over the fence for her first homerun of the season to tie the game at two in the second inning. Mason scored its third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, responding to The Mount's fourth run of the game. Freshman Julia Pillow reached after hitting a bunt single and then scored after Anderson connected on a double to centerfield, which was the final hit for the Patriots in that contest.

Paige Krystofinski pitched four innings for the Patriots and gave up three earned runs off of five hits, while Anderson allowed one run off of three hits in three innings of work.

The Patriots will return to action when they host James Madison this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on April 7 (12 p.m.) at George Mason Field.
