Late Pride Goal Upends Patriots, 2-1
Sept. 27, 2002
Hempstead, NY ... Hofstra scored with 1:44 left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Pride to a 2-1 victory over George Mason in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer game Friday afternoon at University Field in Hempstead, NY. George Mason lost its fourth consecutive game to fall to 2-6 overall and to 1-1 in the CAA, while Hofstra improved to 7-1-1 overall and to 1-0 in the CAA in its inaugural season in the conference. The game-winning goal was set up after George Mason cleared the ball out of its defensive end. Hofstra senior Erin Magee gathered the ball along the right sideline just over midfield and struck a hard diagonal pass across the top of the penalty area. Junior Marisa Pistone sprinted in from her left midfield position and blasted a shot from six yards out inside the far post. George Mason had taken a 1-0 lead at the 56:33 mark when sophomore Lindsay Dittmer intercepted a clear and shot the ball into the upper left corner from 20 yards our for her first career goal. Pistone, however, helped set up the tying goal when she took a long pass from junior midfielder Elaine O'Connor and sent a crossing pass to junior Elyse Bizzozzaro, who deflected a half-volley from the top of the six-yard box that ricocheted off the right post and into the net at 65:56. Senior Naomi Hines started in goal for George Mason and had two saves as she played the first half, while sophomore Sarah Coughlin had three saves as she played the final 45 minutes. Rebecca Wachsberger had four saves in goal for Hofstra, which held a 20-10 edge in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
George Mason visits Pennsylvania Sunday at 1 p.m.
