Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight Behind 1-0 Win Over George Washington
Sept. 9, 2007
The George Mason women's soccer team finished the 2007 Mason Tournament unbeaten but the Patriots had to settle for second place as they lost a tiebreaker for the top spot. Despite the second-place finish, the Patriots had to be happy with a 1-0 victory on Sunday over George Washington. The Patriots earned their third-straight win and second-straight shutout behind fabulous play from goalkeeper Kasey Davenport and defenders Laura Salichs, Hannah Sklar, Sasha Vido and Kimmy Moss. In the match's 51st minute, the Patriots finally broke the scoreless tie. Rachel Wiggins took the ball at midfield and dribbled through the George Washington defense before finding Annie Lebherz on the left wing. Lebherz was unmarked and she put the ball past Marisa Viola for the goal advantage. It was Lebherz' second goal of the season. The Patriots (3-1-0) have now had a winning streak of at-least three games in every season since 2001. The Colonials (2-2-0) had a better performance than Friday when they did not manage a shot. Against Mason, they were at an 18-8 disadvantage and they put two shots on goal. In the first game, Georgetown was able to seal the tournament title by virtue of a 2-0 win. That gave the Hoyas a +7 goal differential and a 2-0-0 record for the tournament. The Hoyas and Seawolves were scoreless at the half before Sarah Fetters, the tournament MVP, scored on an assist from Stephanie Zare in the 59th minute. Less than two minutes later, the Hoyas made it 2-0 when Zare scored on a header, this time on a pass from Vanessa Joyce. That was all goalie Jackie DesJardin would need to seal the win and tournament title.
An all-tournament team was selected by the coaches. Georgetown's Fetters, Zare, Ingrid Wells and Michaela Buonomo were named to the squad as were Mason's Davenport, Sklar, Lebherz and Patti Benner. Stony Brook's Jackie Timmes and Sarah Dwyer also were on the team as was Amy Kern of George Washington. The Patriots will be in action again on Friday when they host Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium. |
