Women's Soccer beats Harvard 2-1

The George Mason women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots defeated Harvard 2-1 to improve to 1-1-0 on the year.

The game was scoreless at the half but Mason, which gave up two goals early in the second half on Friday in a loss to Rider, did exactly that to the Crimson as L.J. Williams scored Mason's first goal of the year and Kelly Keelan followed with one less than 15 minutes later as the Patriots were able to hold off a late Harvard charge.

Williams scored on a header off a corner kick in the 47th minute, breaking Mason's scoreless schnide. Alison Feldman earned the assist as she took the corner kick. In the 60th minute, Keelan picked the ball of a Harvard defender and went in all alone for a 2-0 advantage.

The Crimson (0-1-1) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 69th minute when Lizzy Nichols threaded a pass up the left side to Megan Merritt and she placed the shot just inside the far post. But that was all that the Patriots would allow as Mason will now enter next week's Mason Tournament with a .500 mark.

Williams, Keelan and Sarah Fack were named to the All-Tournament team. Mason finished second in the tournament with three points. Rider (1-0-1), which beat Mason 2-0 on Friday, was the tournament champion with four points. Hartford (0-0-2) had two points and Harvard had one.
