Women's Basketball Hosts Northeastern On Senior Night

March 5, 2008

The George Mason women's basketball team closes out the 2007-08 regular season at home against Northeastern. Mason is 18-16 all-time in regular-season finales, and had never lost to the Huskies until a 65-56 defeat in Boston on Feb. 21. Thursday is the final home game for four Mason seniors: forward Moni Akintunde, and guards C'Vette Henson, Casey Quigley and Lateisha Wade.

Thursday's game is set to begin at 7 p.m. while the four seniors will be honored shortly before tip time. The game can be followed live on Mason All-Access.

Northeastern closes out its regular season in Fairfax with a five-game winning streak in hand. The Huskies are led by guard Shaleyse Smallwood, who leads the team with a 13.3 points per game average. On the boards, Kendra Walton leads with a 5.7 rebound average.

In their last game, junior Jessica Smith tied a career high with 14 points and the George Mason women's basketball team had one of its most potent first-half performances of the season, but the Drexel Dragons fought back to ultimately earn a 62-58 Colonial Athletic Association victory on Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Mason fell to 9-19, 3-14 in the CAA, while the Dragons improved to 17-11, 12-5 in the conference. Smith, who had a perfect shooting day as she went 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, was one of three Patriots to score in double digits, as freshmen Eugenia Broadus and Brittany Eley chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Meanwhile, Drexel forward Gabriela Marginean led all scorers with 26 points.

Following Thursday's game, Mason will have a week off before travelling to Newark, Del., for the first round of the 2008 CAA Championship on Thursday, March 13. Mason will be seeded either 11th or 12th, depending on the outcome of its game and the Hofstra-ODU game.
