Byers Places Seventh at 197 Pounds at the 2007 Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman standout Cayle Byers placed seventh at 197 pounds at the 2007 Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C., finishing the two-day tournament with a 6-2 record. Byers won the seventh-place match when his opponent, Kane Smith of host UNC Greensboro, could no longer compete due to injury. Byers opened up the tournament with a 9-3 victory in his first match of the championship bracket over Liberty's Patrick Hogan. He fell to the consolation bracket when he dropped a close decision by a single point to Minnesota's Justin Bronson, 3-2. After dropping to the consolation bracket, Byers reeled off four consecutive wins before facing Yura Malamura of Minnesota. With a 7-5 victory, Malamura sent Byers to the seventh-place match, where the Mason freshman rebounded with a win over Smith to take seventh place at the weight class. In the team scoring, George Mason finished in 20th place with 24.5 points. Minnesota ran away with the team title with 182 points. Edinboro (130.5 points) and Hofstra (121 points) rounded out the top three. Boston University junior Mike Roberts was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament after winning the title at 149 pounds. The Patriots return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The first match of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
