The George Mason men's volleyball team is on its first winning streak of the season, and while there may be close to two weeks before their next match, the Patriots will be able to spend the break smiling about their most recent victories. The Patriots looked sharp on Thursday evening, taking on a Findlay team that had beaten them earlier this season. Showing no signs of intimidation, George Mason was able to rally after losing the first game to take a 23-30, 30-23, 30-24, 32-30 win over the Oilers. Outside hitter Felix Campos played exceptionally well in the win, collecting 27 kills on 49 attacks with a .367 hitting percentage. The junior also had two solo blocks and one block assist to go with three digs. Campos entered the match third in the nation in kills per game. He upped his season average from 5.13 kills per game to 5.27. As a team the Patriots hit .320 with junior Dustin Crosby adding 13 kills, sophomore Matt Steinfurth adding 10 on 15 attacks and a .467 hitting percentage, and freshman R.J. Goubeaux collecting five kills while hitting .625. Goubeaux also had six block assists while Steinfurth had three block assists and one solo block.
Junior setter Dave Egan did a little bit of everything for the Patriots as he had 56 assists and just one error on 99 total attempts. He also had five kills, eight digs, five block assists and one solo block. Freshman Arturo Barreiro also had six kills while freshman Graham Sheppard had eight digs and was perfect on 46 service receptions.
Findlay got 16 kills from Jeff Overfield, 14 kills each from Jim Dziczkowski and David Franklin and 10 kills from Joey Rossetter. Chris Keen had 57 assists. The Oilers (11-8) hit .261 in the match but committed 17 service errors and had just 9.5 total blocks to 14.0 total blocks by George Mason. The Patriots (2-11) take the court again on March 16 when they host Princeton. |
