Quincy Takes Four-Set Win Over Injury-Riddled Mason Men's Volleyball
Feb. 15, 2004 FAIRFAX, VA - Box Score in PDF Format
The George Mason men's volleyball team hosted Quincy University on Sunday night and the Patriots dressed just 10 of 16 players in the contest, with two starters and its first-string libero on the bench. The result was disappointing if not surprising as the Patriots fought hard but came up just short, falling to the Hawks, 30-27, 27-30, 30-25, 30-25. The Patriots had a strong service game in the first set and five total team blocks to establish a strong defensive game. But the Hawks outhit George Mason, .276 to .174 in the game. The critical stretch came with the score tied 15-15. Quincy won three straight points and the Patriots could not shrink that deficit to less than two the rest of the way. The second game was decidedly different. The Patriots used an early 4-0 run to establish a three-point cushion of their own, and while it never was more than four, it was more than enough to hold off the Hawks. Felix Campos' contributions were critical in that game as he had nine kills and a .750 hitting percentage. Dustin Crosby had 13 assists and the Patriots, as a team, hit .414. The third game saw Quincy (4-4) recapture its early form, as the Hawks had 16 kills and just three errors on 27 attacks for a .481 hitting percentage. The fourth game was more of the same, as the Hawks had 18 kills and seven errors on 40 attacks.
The Patriots were without Matt Steinfurth, the team's leading hitter, Dave Egan, the team's starting setter, and Brad Kniewel, its senior libero. Arturo Barreiro, Graham Smithson, Andres Mansisidor and Dustin Crosby all picked up their play in response, but they couldn't keep the Patriots from falling to 0-7.
Nathan Boyd had 21 kills for Quincy while Branden Been had 14 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. He entered the match with a .500 hitting percentage. Ryan Ehnert added 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Robbie Mendenhall had 58 assists and Ehnert added 12 digs. The Patriots were paced by Campos' 22 kills. He had just four errors on 44 attacks for a .409 hitting percentage. Crosby added 40 assists and Arturo Barreiro had 12 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. R.J. Goubeaux had one solo block, two block assists and five kills and no errors on seven attacks. The two teams face off again on Monday night at 7 p.m. at John Linn Memorial Gymnasium |
