Newport News, Va. - The George Mason Men's tennis team competed this past weekend at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational in Newport News, Va. Mason had seven singles competitors along with three doubles teams at the tournament. Mason's strongest showings came from Eric Vogel whose tournament ended in the semi-finals of the consolation draw for Flight D and Martin Brown who made it to the quarterfinals of his main draw. Daniel Schneider and Jay Friedman competed until being defeated in the quarter-finals of their respective consolation draws.

Daniel Schneider and Stas Budagov competed for Mason in Flight B of the tournament for Mason. Budagov advanced to the second round of the main draw after he defeated Ben Epstein of Loyola by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Unable to continue on that success though, Budagov was defeated from the tournament in the second round by Brian Clay of James Madison University by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(2). After Schneider was defeated in round one of the main draw, he began competition in the consolation draw winning his first round match and receiving a bye in the second round before being defeated in the quarterfinals. Schneider defeated Ryan Lindquist of Winston Salem in the first round by a score of 8-4.

Jordan Lipstock and Jay Freidman took the court for Mason in Flight C. Lipstock took his first round match in the main draw by a score of 6-1, 6-3 over Mike Keefe of Drexel, before losing in round two to Stanley Kahl of Navy. Friedman faced defeat in round one of the main draw but rebounded well in the consolation draw making it to the quarterfinals before being defeated. In round one Friedman took down Tim Koch of Loyola by a score of 9-7 in round one and then received a second round bye before entering the quarterfinals.

Mason had three competitors in Flight D: Eric Vogel, Inram Nayeem, and Martin Brown. Vogel and Nayeem took losses in round one of the main draw, but Brown competed hard and won his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals. In round one Brown defeated Matt Rodgers of Loyola by a score of 6-3, 7-6(3). In the second round Brown took down Tommy Harris of Christopher Newport by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Brown then took on Daniel Balke in the quarterfinals of a hard fought match in which Balke came up with the win by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(6). Nayeem and Vogel took part in the consolation bracket after their main draw losses. Andrew Blumberg of Delaware defeated Nayeem in round one by a score of 8-2. Vogel was able to make it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to Chris Langley of Loyola 8-3. Vogel beat Kevin Repper of Christopher Newport in round one, received a bye in round two and beat Wade Shafer of George Washington in the quarterfinals on his way to the semi-finals.

Of the three doubles teams that Mason put into play, Freidman and Lipstock were the only to come up with a win as they defeated Princeston Gilbert and Troy Moore of Winston Salem by a score of 8-5.

Mason will finish out its fall schedule this weekend at the ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament begins Friday the 20th and will continue until Tuesday the 24th.
