Netters drop match to Mount Olive, 8-1

March 12, 2008

The Men's Tennis team continued their tour of North Carolina taking on Mount Olive, but came up short as they fell 8-1. The Patriots move to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 on the tour of North Carolina.

Top Player Brian Fitzgerald showed his stuff against Vitor Lage as he came out with another win. After taking the first set in commanding fashion, 6-2, Fitzgerald regressed in his play and fell 2-6 in the second set. Forced to a third set Fitzgerald battled Lage and was tied 5-5 before taking the match.

Dan Schneider played some of the best tennis he has played all season as he forced the match into a superbreaker. After losing the first set, he pushed the second set to a 6-6 tie. In the superbreaker for the second set, Schneider fell 7-2.

Stas Budagov played in the No.2 singles for the Patriots dropping the match 6-4, 6-3. Harwood Hoskins took on Alex Queiros in the No. 4 singles and fell 6-1, 6-3. Martin Brown made his first appearance at the No.5 singles, but could not pull out a victory as he fell 6-1, 6-2. Matt Vaughn played at the No.6 singles and dropped the match 6-2, 6-1

The doubles action was a bit tighter, but rendered the same result as all three teams fell. Fitzgerald and Schneider had the best showing as they forced the match to a 7-7 tie before losing the next two games and then the match. Vaughn and Jordan Lipstock played at the No.2 doubles and dropped the match 8-6. Budagov and Hoskins came in at the No.3 doubles, but fell 8-2.

Mason's Men's Tennis continues it's road trip around North Carolina as the take on CAA rival UNC Wilmington at 11 am on March 15th.
