NC Wesleyan '77:
17th Season

Gary Quam returns for another season as head coach of the George Mason men's tennis team. This will be his 17th season with the men. After guiding both the men's and women's programs for nine consecutive seasons, Quam began focusing solely on the men's team following the 2000-01 campaign.

A 1977 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College, Quam was a four-year star on the Battling Bishops tennis squad and the captain his senior season. The team most valuable player was a Dixie Conference champion twice, once each at number three and number five singles.

In 1995, Quam was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Coach of the Year after the Patriots had their most successful campaign ever, posting a 14-6 record, including a 6-1 mark in the CAA. The team also enjoyed its best-ever finish in the CAA Tournament, placing second. In 1994 Quam guided George Mason to a third-place finish in the CAA Tournament and finished 10-9 overall, 5-4 in conference play.

In 1988-89, his first year in Fairfax, he served as the men's assistant coach under Sue Whiteside before assuming leadership of both teams the following year.

In competitive play, Quam achieved a ranking as high as number six in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association (MTA) and a number three ranking in the Commonwealth of Virginia in singles. He's also reached a number three doubles ranking in his age group. Because of his performance in the Over-35 National Indoor Championships over the past few years, he had received a number 52 national ranking.
