Patriots Sweep Tigers

FAIRFAX, VA ... The George Mason men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Jim McKay Natatorium.

The George Mason men defeated Towson, 183-115, while the Patriot women defeated the Tigers, 179-116.

In the men's meet, freshman Tim Norton led George Mason as he won three events - the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:44.76, the 200 butterfly in 1:52.43 and the 400 individual medley in 4:03.81. Senior Cameron Charlton and freshman John Appleman each won two events, as Charlton captured the 100 breaststroke in 57.75 seconds and the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.63, while Appleman won the one-meter diving with 256.94 points and the three-meter diving with 264.22 points. Junior Todd Long also won the 50 freestyle in 22.18 seconds.

The Patriots also won both men's relays. The group of senior Wes Ebanks, Charlton, junior Nathan Kellogg and freshman Matthew McGillicuddy won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.41, while senior J.P. Clark, McGillicuddy, sophomore David Cooper and Long combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.27.

Aaron Krause led Towson as he won the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.89 seconds, the 200 backstroke in 1:54.08 and the 500 freestyle in 4:39.86. Also winning events for the Tigers were Chris Martinetti in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.78, Drew Williams in the 100 freestyle in 48.46 seconds and John Miller in the 100 butterfly in 51.93 seconds.

On the women's side, juniors Lauren Stinnett and Sam Ladeveze and sophomore Christy Anderson each won two events to lead the Patriots. Stinnett took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:41.48 and the 200 butterfly in 2:06.83, Ladeveze captured the 50 freestyle in 24.80 seconds and 100 freestyle in 54.60 seconds, and Anderson won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.27 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.29.

 

 

Also winning events for the Patriots were senior Katie Swearingen in the 500 freestyle in 5:17.95, sophomore Lexi Hatfield in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.44, and sophomore Stefani Lubore in the 200 backstroke in 2:09.57. In diving, sophomore Mary Campioli won the one-meter event with 269.55 points and junior Jamie Downing took the three-meter event with 288.14 points. Lubore, Anderson, Stinnett and Ladeveze also combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:50.58.

Jennifer Irby won two events to lead the Towson women, capturing the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.08 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 59.57 seconds, and she joined Jackie Cona, Lenore Cruz and Cindy Neat as the Tigers won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.47. Towson's Allison Paul also took the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:40.65.

George Mason returns to action next Saturday as it visits James Madison at 1 p.m.
