UMBC Pulls Ahead at Patriot Invitational

Nov. 23, 2002 ... The University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) men and the Duke women carried the lead after the second of three days of competition Saturday at the Patriot Invitational at the Jim McKay Natatorium. The Retriever men held a solid 562-449.5 lead over first-day leader UNC Wilmington, with Duke a close third with 446 points. On the women's side, the Blue Devils swept all seven swimming events and continued to dominate as they moved to a 696.5-466.5 lead over host George Mason. Meet records continued to fall like autumn leaves in the third year of the event. After four meet records were set Friday, four more were broken in the preliminary round Saturday before three of those marks and three others were surpassed in the finals. In all, 11 meet records have fallen in the first two days of the event. On Saturday, Duke's Katie Ness set two meet records as she won the 100-yard butterfly (55.52 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (56.58), breaking marks she had set earlier in the day in each event. Ness also joined Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg and Lauren Hancock as the Blue Devil 800 freestyle relay set a meet record with a time of 7:41.90. Duke teammate Lauren Cornet also set two meet records on the day. She set a new mark in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:27.22 in the finals (Blue Devil Amy Halligan also surpassed the record in 4:27.52), and she broke the record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.22 in the preliminary round before winning the final in 1:04.38. The Blue Devils made it a clean sweep of the women's swimming events for the day as Sundberg won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.95 and Ness, Cornet, Halligan and Julia Lewis combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:47.43.
George Mason's Mary Campioli, Liz Gabriel and Jamie Downing swept the top three spots in the women's three-meter diving. Campioli won with 412 points, Gabriel was second with 395.25 and Downing third with 394.5.
On the men's side, Duke's John Humphrey and UMBC's Carlos Canepa set meet records. Humphrey set his mark as he won the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:58.06, breaking the mark of 4:00.02 set earlier in the day by George Mason's Tim Norton, who placed third in the finals in 4:02.73. Canepa won the 200 freestyle with a record time of 1:41.06, while UNC Wilmington's Tiago Barreira, who placed second, also broke the previous mark in 1:42.08. Three teams, led by UMBC's group of Canepa, Jakub Sroczynski, Josh Farley and Brad Green in 6:53.37, surpassed the meet record in the 800 freestyle relay. Also going under the previous record were second-place Duke (Humphrey, Cooper Moore, Teddy Helfers, Trevor Yates) in 6:55.92 and third-place George Mason (Norton, David Cooper, Todd Long and Wes Ebanks) in 6:56.50. Other men's winners on Saturday included UMBC's Geza Szabo in the 100 butterfly (50.75 seconds), Duke's Ben Rowland in the 100 breaststroke (58.78), Seton Hall's Evan Keonig in the 100 backstroke (51.63), Duke's Tim Hyer in one-meter diving (538.55 points) and the Seton Hall 200 medley relay of Jack Leavitt, Steven Falcone, Jason Kay and Jonathan Bertera in 1:34.97.
