Nov. 24, 2008
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman midfielder Eber Martinez (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field High School) was named to the College Soccer News' National Team of the Week on Monday after scoring the game-winning goal in the Patriots' opening round NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship victory over Penn on Friday evening at George Mason Stadium. The 1-0 win was Mason's first in NCAA Tournament play since the 1996 season. Following a scoreless first half, the Patriots scored the lone goal of the match only 1:45 after the intermission when senior forward Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe found Eber Martinez open in the middle of the field. After gathering the pass from Adjeman-Pamboe, Eber Martinez launched a shot from 25 yards out that curved into the upper-left corner of the net for his second goal in the past three matches. After battling injuries at the start of the season, Eber Martinez has peaked at the end of the season to play a key role in Mason's current eight-match winning streak. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the CAA Championship after scoring a goal and adding a pair of assists in Mason's semifinal win over William and Mary. The Patriots travel to College Park, Md. tomorrow to take on the second-seeded Maryland Terrapins (18-3-0) at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
