Mason Men's Soccer Advances to CAA Championship Semifinals
Oct. 31, 2006
Fairfax, Va...--In the 24th minute, sophomore Dan Ames (Livonia, N.Y.) netted his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner, to help propel fourth-seeded Mason (12-5-1) to a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Northeastern (8-10-2) in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at George Mason Stadium Tuesday evening. With this win, Mason will play in the conference championship semifinal round for the first time since 2003. For the lone goal of the night, sophomore Lucas Pardew (Parkton, Md.) weaved through a few Northeastern defenders on the right side of the field and fed it to Ames who then headed it in the lower left corner of the net from about eight yards out. This is Ames second game-winning goal of the season and Pardew's first assist on the season. With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Northeastern junior forward Ahmed Talaat had an opportunity to tie the game, but Mason freshman goalkeeper Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.) snatched the attempt away from him for one of his six saves of the night. Mason outshot NU, 18-11, and also had a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks, while the Huskies' goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat collected nine saves in 90 minutes, but did allow one goal. This marks the ninth time this season in which the Patriots have won by a score of 1-0 and Tuesday's win is the 11th shutout for the Patriots in 2006. The Patriots will next face #1-seeded Towson on Nov. 3 at the Virginia Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Va. at 5 p.m. Mason and the Tigers recently faced off against each other on Oct. 27 in Fairfax and the TU claimed a 2-1 double-overtime victory. Box Score--Oct. 31, 2006 1 2 Final Northeastern (8-10-2) 0 0 0 Mason (12-5-1) 1 0 1
