Oct. 16, 2005

Box Score

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Georgia State Sunday afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up at George Mason Stadium. With this loss, the Patriots now stand at 4-5-4 overall (0-2-4 CAA), while the Panthers improve to 4-9 overall (2-4).

The lone goal of the contest came in the 70th minute as GSU freshman forward Dathan Knott took a pass from junior forward Alberto Villarreal just inside the box. Knott proceeded to fire a shot off from about five yards out and watched it pass through the fingertips of Mason goalkeeper Eric Barnes (Aiken, S.C.) for the game-winning goal.

Barnes was in net for the first 82 minutes of the game and tallied three saves for the Patriots and allowed one goal. Junior midfielder Josh Fleming (Fairfax, Va.) replaced Barnes for the final eight minutes of the contest for his first career appearance as goalkeeper for Mason. Freshman Filipe Carvalho saw action in the net the entire game for the Panthers and collected five saves on the afternoon.

The Patriots outshot the Panthers, 19-7, and Mason also had a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Mason plays its next two games on the road, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against Delaware in Newark, Del. on Oct. 21.
