Men's Soccer Falls to No. 6 Maryland, 3-0

Sept. 9, 2007

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The George Mason men's soccer team traveled to nearby College Park, Md. to face its toughest test of the season thus far, facing the sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins before a crowd of 1,509 on Sunday evening at Ludwig Field. The Patriots' defense held the Terrapins scoreless late into the second half of play, before finally falling to Maryland by the final score of 3-0.

With the loss, Mason drops to 2-2-0 on the season, while Maryland improves to 2-1-1 with the win. The Terrapin offensive attack kept the pressure on the Patriots' defense all evening, taking 13 total shots to Mason's two.

However, despite the relentless pressure by the Terrapin offense, Mason's defense was up to the task, holding Maryland scoreless throughout the entire first half and well into the second half, before the Terrapins finally broke through 71:21 into the match when midfielder Jeremy Hall scored with a perfectly placed header off a corner kick by forward Graham Zusi. Leading 1-0, Hall struck again, scoring his second goal of the night at the 79:38 mark to give Maryland a two-goal lead.

Sophomore Drew Yates wrapped up the scoring for the Terrapins, finding the back of the net with less than two minutes left in the match, after teammate Aki Kadotani stole the ball and deflected it to Yates for the goal-scoring opportunity.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley played all 90 minutes in the net for Mason, recording three stops, including a save of a penalty kick by Zusi. Freshman Fro Adu, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week award winner, took both of George Mason's shots in the match.

The Patriots will attempt to rebound with a victory in their next match, against Monmouth on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
