Mason's Golfer Mike Cavanagh Earns Second-team All-CAA

June 10, 2005

The CAA handed out its golf awards today and junior Mike Cavanagh earned Second Team All-CAA. The Perham, Minnesota native led the team in six tournaments and finished the season with the second best stroke average on the team with 74.84 strokes per round. During the fall, he led the team in scoring, averaging 72.0 strokes. He placed a career-best 2nd at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate (9/24-26), one stroke off the lead (69-70-139), ranking him with the third-best score in Mason history for a 36-hole event. He also placed in the Top 20 in six tournaments, including four in the fall.

The Towson University duo of senior Billy Wingerd and sophomore Jeff Castle shared CAA Player of the Year honors in voting by the league's men's golf coaches. Joining them on the All-CAA First Team were 2005 CAA individual champion Brian Joyce from UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Jens Fahrbring and William & Mary senior Tim Pemberton.

UNC Wilmington freshman Will Shambley (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) was voted CAA Rookie of the Year. He topped all CAA freshman with a 75.22 scoring average in 12 events. His best finishes were a tie for second at the Landfall Tradition and a tie for fifth at the Nokia Tulane Invitational. He is the third Seahawk to win the award in the past four years.

Towson's Brian Yaniger was named CAA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Tigers to a second place finish at the 2005 CAA Championship and their second consecutive at-large berth to the NCAA Regionals. Towson finished 18th out of 27 teams at the East Regional in Nashville but failed to advance to the national championship.

Junior Mike Kirby was listed as also receiving votes. Kirby led the Patriots with a career-best 74.7 stroke average, good for eight place in season stroke average in Mason history. His best finish was tied for third at the Winthrop Invitational (3/14-15) with career-best 145 (71-74). He finished 8th at the CAA tournament, besting a 12th place finish last season.
