Mike Kirby Leads the Frank Landrey Invitational after Two Rounds
Oct. 17, 2005
George Mason's Mike Kirby, coming off his first tournament win last week at the JMU Invitational, is the leader after 36 holes of competition at the first annual Frank Landrey Intercollegiate Invitational, being played at the Poplar Grove Golf Course today. He was the only golfer to record a pair of sub-par rounds as he currently leads the field of 50 golfers with a three-under-par 141 (70-71), while Liberty's Nathan Schenz-Davis stands in second with a two-under-par 142 (74-68). George Mason goes into Tuesday's round in fourth place, only four strokes off second-place Maryland. Host school Liberty was able to weather the blustery conditions of the first round and post a pair of solid rounds to lead by 12 strokes. The Flames were the only team to shoot a sub-300 round in the first 18 holes. However, the conditions surrounding the course calmed down for the afternoon, resulting in a more competitive second round as six of the 10 teams posted scores below 300. The Patriots Mike Cavanagh recorded 10 birdies to finish the two rounds tied for 14th carding a six-over-par 150 (78-72). Dan Hurley cut eight strokes off the morning round in the afternoon, and recorded two eagles on the day to finish with a 154 (81-73). Junior Nick DeSimone had a three-over-par first round, but finished with a 155 (75-80) after shooting eight-over-par on the second round. David Murnane shot a 77 and followed it up with an 87 in the afternoon for a 164 total (77-87). The tournament will conclude with a final 18 holes of competition tomorrow at the par-72, 7,059 yard Poplar Grove Golf Course. Fin.
