Mason Golfers Finish Second at Towson Invitational
Sept. 21, 2005
George Mason moved from fourth place after the first round to a second place finish at the 36-hole Towson Invitational. In the first two tournaments of the fall campaign the Patriots have finished first or second, winning the Navy Fall Invite last weekend. Campbell won the 12-team tournament by 10 strokes, shooting a team 7-under par at the par 72, 6,901 yard Musket Ridge Golf Course outside Frederick, Md. Mason shot a second round 286, seven strokes better than their first-round 293 total to finish 579 overall, and ahead of CAA foes James Madison by two strokes and host Towson by four strokes. That is the third lowest team score in Mason history. The Patriots were led by sophomore J.J. Amoruso, shooting a two-under par 142 (73-69). Amoruso carded a 73 round one score which included four birdies, but was marred by a triple-bogey on hole #15. He shot 3-under on day two. Junior Nick DeSimone shot even par both days (72-72)=144. Junior Dan Hurley finished tied for 16th with a 2-over 146 and Mike Kirby rounded out the team scoring, shooting a 3-over par 147. Fredric Sundberg of Campbell was the individual medalist, carding a two-round 136. Mason's Mike Cavanagh, entered as an individual, finished second just three strokes off the leader with a career-best 7-under par 65 in round two. The Patriots David Murname and Trey Bressler also entered as individuals, finishing 45th and 56th respectively. The golfers return to action this weekend at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
