Mason's Golf Team in Seventh Place Heading into Final Round at CAAs

PINEHURST, N.C. (April 15, 2006) - George Mason's golf team slipped a spot from sixth to currently seventh place after two rounds of action at the CAA Championships at Pinehurst, N.C. The Patriots actually shot two strokes better than round one with a 311 team score, but Towson shot the second best team score of the day with a 298 to jump ahead of Mason.

The Patriots Mike Kirby remains in the hunt after carding a 72-77=149. He is tied for sixth with JMU's Scott Marino, who added 13 strokes in the second round to the tournament-low 68 that he recorded on Friday. Mason's Dan Hurley has recorded a pair of 78s to stand tied for 24th. J.J. Amoruso, Nick DeSimone and Mike Cavanagh each recorded better scores on day two with 78, 78 and 79 respectively.

The leader is VCU's Manuel Relancio who fired a 73 on Saturday at Pinehurst No. 6 to take a one-stroke lead, but Georgia State answered with players in spots 2-5 in the individual standings to extend its lead to a healthy 23 strokes.

The Panthers tallied a 294 on the day to give them a total of 580 with one day remaining in the tournament. Relancio's 70-73=143 leads the field on the par 71, 6,943-yard course, and his VCU Rams hold second place with a total score of 603. Teammate Jens Fahrbring remains tied for eighth with a 150.

The final round will begin on Sunday at 8 a.m.
