George Mason men's basketball head coach Jim Larranaga has announced that sophomore forward Sammy Hernandez has elected to transfer and he will seek the opportunity to play basketball closer to his home in Florida. Hernandez will finish the semester academically but will no longer be a member of the team. Hernandez will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Sammy is a very likeable young man," said Larranaga. "He made a tremendous contribution in our run to the Final Four last year giving quality rest to our big men Will Thomas and Jai Lewis. We wish him only the best in the future."

Hernandez played in all 35 games last season with one start. He averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was fifth on the team in rebounding and seventh in minutes, averaging 11.1 per contest. He played in all five games in the NCAA Tournament, scoring five straight points against North Carolina to spark Mason's first-half comeback. He also drained a 3-pointer against Connecticut, keeping Mason close in the first half.

Hernandez played in the first two games this season and he has scored two points while grabbing three rebounds. A native of Puerto Rico, Hernandez grew up in Miami. He attended high school in Miami and later Jacksonville, Fla., leading a pair of high schools to state championships.
