Mason's Bill Rohland Selected as Play-by-Play Announcer for Men's Basketball
Oct. 3, 2005
FAIRFAX, VA - George Mason Athletic Director Tom O'Connor announced that Bill Rohland, color analyst for men's basketball for the past seven seasons, will move to the play-by-play position this season. He takes over for veteran broadcast partner Byron Kerr, who held the position for 11 years before accepting the same position with the George Washington Colonials.
"Bill has the experience and knowledge of college basketball and a tremendous passion for his alma mater," O'Connor said. "He has translated his enthusiasm for Patriots basketball into his broadcasts and proven he is up to the challenge as the next "Voice of the Patriots."
"Very few broadcasters are afforded the opportunity to not only do play by play, but as an added bonus, for the university they attended," said Rohland. "I'm honored to continue my association with Mason which began in 1989 as a student. It's a pleasure as well to work with AD Tom O'Connor and Coach L, who are supportive in bringing the best coverage to Mason fans on our radio broadcasts."
Rohland started his broadcast career as a student on WGMU Radio. He currently is the assistant program director and afternoon talk show host on ESPN Radio 1300 in Baltimore. He also works as a studio host for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens Radio Network.
Prior experience includes game day producer and radio pre/post game for the NBA Washington Wizards games for three years, 1995-1998, and on Sports Talk 980 as a sports anchor. He also spent four years (1998-2000) as a sports anchor for CBS Sports.
Basketball has proven to be a passion for Rohland, who also spends his time coaching basketball. He has six years of experience as an assistant varsity coach for girl's basketball at George Mason, Robinson and Holy Child high schools. The George Mason team went 26-1 in 1998 and crowned state champions during his tenure from 1997-99. He also has coached AAU and 18U teams.
Mason games are broadcast on WDCT Radio (1310 AM) of Falls Church, VA, as part of the Patriots Basketball Network.
