Christian Caputo begins his ninth season with the George Mason men's basketball team and his sixth as an assistant coach. Caputo spent the previous three seasons as an administrative assistant and video coordinator.
Caputo's main responsibilities include recruiting, scouting the opposition and preparing the Patriots' green team to simulate the opposition's plays and style in practice. He was a featured in a Washington Post article in the summer of 2008 on the life of an assistant coach scouting recruits at summer tournaments. He helped put together Mason's most recent recruiting class which ESPN.com named the top recruiting class in the country among non-BCS schools. Hoopscoop.com named him one of the Top 25 non-BCS assistant coaches in the nation.
This past summer, Caputo attended the Villa 7 Consortium, which brings together some of the top assistant coaches in the nation for an educational symposium that features some of basketball's top coaches and serves as a networking opportunity. Over the past four years, since it was first formed by VCU's Center for Sports Leadership with assistance from Nike and Daktronics, 38 alum of Villa 7 have been hired as head coaches.
Caputo played a major role in Mason's run to the Final Four in 2006 as he prepared the Patriots as they played nationally ranked teams and future NBA players in nearly every contest. His scouting reports helped Mason to its biggest wins in school history. In 2008, he helped lead the team to its second-highest win total in school history as Mason beat a nationally-ranked Kansas State team on national TV and won the CAA title for the first time since 2001.
Prior to becoming an assistant coach, Caputo was responsible for logging videotape into an editing system to create scouting tapes for use by the coaching staff in preparing for practices and games. He also was involved with creating highlight video and other duties as assigned by the coaching staff. During the summer, Caputo is the Co-Director of Jim Larranaga's Junior Patriots Program in the fall.
Following his first season with the Patriots, Caputo's duties expanded to include coordination of the coaching staff recruiting database and its extensive mailing system. He was also responsible for purchasing scouting services and maintaining contact with the publishers. He assisted in supervising weight room and study hall hours as well as all recruiting visits.
Caputo is a 2002 graduate of Westfield (Mass.) State College with a degree in finance and economics. He was a four-year letterwinner as a point guard for the NCAA Division III Owls, being named captain and winning the Outstanding Contributor Award as a senior.
A native of Elmhurst, N.Y., Caputo is a 1998 graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School, the same alma mater of Patriot head coach Jim Larranaga. Playing for the legendary Jack Curran, Caputo spent two years on the varsity team and saw 11 of his teammates (during his four years at Molloy) go on to play NCAA Division I basketball.
