Krieger, Soares Earn All-State Honors
June 25, 2008
George Mason junior outfielder Scott Krieger and sophomore second baseman Ryan Soares added postseason honors on Wednesday afternoon as they were each named All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Krieger was chosen to the first team, one of just two players to repeat the honor. Soares was named to the second team. Krieger hit .381 with 21 homers, 16 doubles, 60 RBI, 64 runs and a .761 slugging percentage. Krieger broke his own record for George Mason single-season homers and broke the school record for career homers. He, along with Virginia's Greg Miclat, were members of the 2007 All-State first team. Soares, one of the top defensive players in the state, had a fine season at the plate. He hit .315 with seven homers, 15 doubles, 49 RBI and 44 runs scored. He was one at-bat shy of tying the school record for at-bats in a season. In total, the Colonial Athletic Association was dominant in placing members on the All-State Team. Mike Sheridan of William & Mary was Player of the Year, Spanky McFarland of James Madison was the Coach of the Year and Turner Phelps of the Dukes was Rookie of the Year. Of the 12 players named to the first team, seven were from the CAA. Four of the 12 players on the second team were from the CAA.
