Krieger, Henderson, Flasher, Modica, Bour Selected in MLB Draft
June 10, 2009
George Mason All-Americans Scott Krieger, Chris Henderson and Mike Modica and juniors Justin Bour and Jordan Flasher were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Amateur Draft on Wednesday afternoon with Krieger being selected in the 19th round by the Milwaukee Brewers, Henderson being chosen in the 21st round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Flasher being chosen in the 22nd round by the Boston Red Sox, Modica being selected in the 24th round by the Houston Astros and Bour being chosen in the 25th round by the Chicago Cubs. The five players drafted are the most in a single-season in school history. In 1997 and 2007, the Patriots had three players drafted. Teams have until August 15 to sign players or they lose their rights. Krieger, a senior outfielder, and Modica, a senior starting pitcher, have exhausted their eligibility. Henderson, a junior catcher, and Bour, a junior first baseman, could return to Mason to play out their senior seasons. Flasher, a redshirt junior relief pitcher, also has a year of eligibility remaining and could return for a fifth season. Earlier in the day on Wednesday, both Krieger and Henderson were named second-team All-American by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Previously, Henderson was named a first-team All-American by Louisville Slugger while Krieger and Modica were second-team Louisville Slugger All-Americans. Also on Wednesday, Henderson was named ECAC Player of the Year while Mason's Bill Brown was named ECAC Coach of the Year. Krieger, a native of Towson, Md., played left field and first base at Mason and he was drafted as a left fielder. He was the CAA Co-Player of the Year this season and he finished his career holding the school record for hits, runs, home runs and total bases, is second all-time in slugging percentage and at-bats and third in doubles and triples. He is the CAA's all-time leader in RBI and total bases and is second in home runs and runs, third in slugging percentage and fourth in hits. He hit 20 or more homers three straight seasons and he was the nation's active leader in homers and RBI when he concluded his career.
Henderson, who hails from Marlton, N.J., is a finalist for the Bench Award, given to the nation's top collegiate catcher, and he is a semifinalist for the Howser Trophy, given to the nation's best player. He is the first player in school history named a first-team All-American and he was the CAA Co-Player of the Year and the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. This season he set the school's single-season record for hits, with 97, and he became just the sixth player in Division I school history to hit better than .400. He hit .413 with a .702 slugging percentage, a .487 on-base percentage, 14 homers, 22 doubles, 58 RBI, 70 runs and 165 total bases. He was second in the CAA in batting average, hits, runs, doubles and total bases and he had one of the top five single-seasons in school history in terms of batting average, on-base percentage, runs, doubles and total bases... He is second all-time at Mason in career batting average (.369) and fielding percentage (.990) and he is the school's all-time leader in career doubles (58). The Dodgers indicated when they selected him that they want him to play third base, a position he never played in college. Flasher is Mason's all-time leader in career saves and career appearances and he is second all-time in the CAA in career saves. In 2007, the Manassas, Va. native was top five in the nation with a single-season school record 14 saves and his fastball was clocked in the mid-90s. But in his first appearance of 2008, he injured his elbow and missed the entire season, receiving a medical redshirt. This season, while still working to get back to his pre-injury form, he had six saves and struck out 17 batters in 19.1 innings spanning 20 appearances. In his career, he has 24 saves in 73 appearances and he has struck out 83 batters in 87.1 innings. Flasher was drafted last year, despite missing the season with an injury, in the 39th round. Modica, who had previously been in the 45th round coming out of high school and in the 46th round after last season's campaign, is Mason's all-time leader in career starts. The native of Sewell, N.J. was 11-2 this year and was named first-team All-CAA. His second-team All-American selection is the highest honor ever afforded a Mason pitcher. He was also the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association University Pitcher of the Year. Aside from leading the CAA in wins, he also led the conference with a .239 opponent's batting average. He is second all-time at Mason in career strikeouts, career wins and career innings pitched. Bour, a native of Centreville, Va., was named first-team All-CAA this past season, hitting .339 with 17 homers and 66 RBI. He had 75 hits on the year with 14 doubles, a .633 slugging percentage and a .420 on-base percentage. He had one of the top-10 single-season sin school history in terms of homer sand RBI. He is currently second all-time in school history in homers and RBI, fourth in total bases, sixth in slugging percentage, ninth in batting average and 10th in hits. He was a preseason third-team Louisville Slugger All-American and in 2007, he was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team and was the Virginia VaSID Rookie of the Year. |
