Eight Qualifiers Highlight Track and Field's Mason Outdoor Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. - Eight George Mason entries met the qualifying standards for the upcoming IC4A/ECAC Championships as the Patriots concluded the 2009 outdoor track and field regular season on Saturday, hosting the Mason Outdoor Invitational at George Mason Stadium. In the overall team standings, Mason finished second on the men's side with 96 total points, while the women scored 92 points for a third-place finish. William & Mary claimed the men's title with 111 points while the Towson women earned first place with 116.75 points. The Mason men saw four IC4A-qualifying performances on Saturday. In the 800-meter run, freshman Tyler Golden ran the fourth-fastest time among competitors, finishing in 1:51.34 and earning him a spot in the IC4A meet. Freshman Ja-Vell Bullard won the 200-meter dash in 21.76, meeting the IC4A standard in an event he had previously qualified for thanks to his indoor time. Sophomore Kevin Wilson also met the IC4A qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 47.67 which fell just short of his season-best time of 47.49. The Mason 4x100-meter relay team finished in 42.23, which met the IC4A standard but did not surpass the season-best time of 41.31. In other action, freshman Lee Oxenford won the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.65 meters. On the women's side, there were four ECAC-qualifying performances. Junior Tiara Swindell improved upon two of her marks which had already earned her a spot in the ECAC Championships, as she finished second in the 200-meter dash (24.54) and won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.70. Junior Asia Odum won the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 14.23 which met the ECAC standard. She had previously qualified with a time of 14.12. Freshman Grace Mavugara also reached the qualifying standard but fell short of her season-best, as she placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.29 meters.
The Patriots will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Princeton, N.J., for the three-day IC4A/ECAC Championships. To date, Mason has 25 spots in the event reserved as a result of clearing the qualifying standards this season. |
