  Student-Athlete Development

Mason's Life Skills program focuses on providing opportunities for student-athletes to actively learn about prospective careers and preparing for life after intercollegiate athletics. Through the Life Skills program and its partnership with the University Career Services, our goal is to help student-athletes develop skills that can assist them in a more successful transition into their lives after intercollegiate athletics. The following are a few examples of those opportunities:

  • Resume Writing Workshop
    • Guided by the Director of Life Skills and the Lead Academic Coordinator, student-athletes are given the opportunity to actively craft a more professional approach to communicating with prospective employers. Local career and recruiting professionals present a realistic commentary on what they look for in a cover letter, resume and email correspondence.

  • Career Networking Seminar
    • A spring semester event that allows the student-athletes to apply what they have learned in the Fall at the Resume Writing Workshop by networking with local and national professionals from various industries. All select professionals are determined by both recommendation and the career focuses of the student-athletes interested in attending the event. Many former student-athletes return to Mason to speak on behalf of the program and their employer.

  • Graduation Checklist and Timely Tips for Graduation
    • A pamphlet is distributed to all underclassmen regarding how to properly forecast their curriculum prior to graduation. All questions and concerns regarding the literature are directed to our selected academic coordinators and/or university career professionals.

     Community Service

Giving back to your community is not only good for the community but it also provides student-athletes with a valuable education. The Life Skills program community service initiatives are geared to exposing student-athletes to the importance of serving the surrounding communities, both on and off campus. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) plays a very active role in developing and implementing community service events for SAAC and Intercollegiate teams.

    Intercollegiate-driven Community Service Events:

  • CAA Blood Challenge
    • Annual event where Mason Athletics co-sponsors alongside with INOVA Blood Donor Services to promote both a competitive and collective effort to raise the most blood donations within the CAA for needed recipients within the Fairfax County community.

  • Annual Aimee Willard Memorial 5K Fun Run/Walk
    • In collaboration with the Annual Victims' Rights 5k Run/Walk. Mason Athletics and the Patriot Club partnered with GMU Police, ROTC and Sexual Assault Services to combine both races into one large event to further promote Victims' Rights Week as well as increase awareness and education as part of a campus-wide effort to prevent sexual assault. All funds raised by the Mason Athletics Department went to the Aimee Willard Endowment Scholarship Fund honoring the memory of the former Patriot student-athlete.

Local and Nationally Celebrated Community Service Activities:

  • Dulles Day Plane Pull

    • Our 1st Community Service event for 2010-2011 school year was the Dulles Day Plane Pull. Dulles Day Plane Pull is an event to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes. The event takes place at Dulles Airport, they shut down an entire portion of the tarmac for the plane pull. The event is more than just a plane pull, they also had a car show, aircraft displays and a Kids' Zone.

  • Happy Heart Walk

    • Annual event where members of Mason community, Student-Athletes, and Staff/Faculty take a one-mile walk around campus to promote Healthy Heart Awareness.

  • Witch Watch
    • Annual event where members of the Mason community and Student-Athletes chaperone students around the Fairfax Community to monitor the safety of local "trick-or-treaters".

  • Canned Food Drive ("Hunger and Homelessness Week")
    • Annual event that allows the Mason's Athletics community to give just as much as they receive during the holiday season. Donations in the past have gone to local organizations located in Fairfax County.

  • Read Across America
    • The reading celebration takes place every year on March 2nd in commemoration of Dr. Seuss' birthday. This national event unites thousands of libraries, community centers and schools to encourage our nation's youth to come together and start befriending their books.
